Rēzekne is a major city and centre of the Rēzekne administrative district. It lies in the very centre of Latgale region, at the crossroads of two international motorways - St. Petersburg-Warsaw and Riga-Moscow, hence it is called also "the heart of Latgale". Rēzekne lies on 7 hills and the Rēzekne river flows through it. Latgale liberation monument - United for Latvia, popularly called Latgales Māra, is the symbol of Rēzekne. The temples of different confessions are the most characteristic trait of Rēzekne testifying to the multinational composition of the city population.
